According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), more than 4,000 pedestrians were hit by cars in the U.S. in 2009 alone. And more recently, a study performed by the District Department of Transportation reveals that more accidents occur in the crosswalks of Washington, D.C. than the in the streets. Wondering if anything could be done about this?

Toyota has always been concerned about car safety improvement. This time, more than increasing crash safety, Toyota is now researching how to avoid accident all together. More specifically, Toyota is developing a new crash-avoidance system that will automatically steer the vehicle away from the accident. This new pre-collision steering control technology was presented by Toyota for the first time at a recent media event in Japan.

There Toyota' s demonstration showed how the system integrates cameras, on-board microprocessors and millimeter-wave radar to calculate and implement braking and steering adjustments. While the system will effectively avoid many different crashes, Toyota is hoping to prevent vehicle accident involving pedestrians. In addition, the new crash-avoidance system will avoid crashes involving other cars and small animals.

Toyota is also currently working on other advanced safety features, such as :

-    A pop-up hood aimed at softening the impact when a car runs into a pedestrian
-    Light-blocking technology designed to shield against the brightness of blinding/distracting high-beam rays
-    A heart-attack-sensing steering wheel

At this time, there is no estimate date of arrival of when the new pre-collision steering control technology might be available in Toyota models. But we can bet it will not take long.
