Until recently, Toyota was known for racing the Corolla Axio GT300 in Japan's Super GT Series. This year, however, some new regulations and limitations to the performance of a vehicle within the GT300 segment is forcing many automakers to rethink what vehicle they put on the track. Rather than simply walk away from the series all together, Toyota is taking the opportunity to focus on a new area of performance of their own.
The segment of performance that Capitol Toyota, serving the greater Salem area, is referring to is hybrids. Drivers have never quite associated the Toyota Prius with break-neck speeds and hairpin turns, but that isn't stopping the Japanese automaker from entering the hybrid into the 2012 Super GT Series. If anything, we'd even dare to say that it's encouraging them!
A concept picture of the Toyota Prius GT300 racer has been leaked online, and while we're tempted to say that it confirms that rumors, we also know that Toyota likely has racing concepts drawn up for other models as well. Still, one look at the incredible racer immediately breaks any previous notions that anyone may have once had about how the Prius would fare on the race track. The picture in question shows the Prius sporting a lower suspension, a large rear spoiler, a fully reworked body, and other racing specifications. In fact, at a glance, we could hardly tell that it was supposed to be a Prius!
Now that we've piqued your interest in this year's Super GT Series, we ask that you stay tuned for more information on which vehicle Toyota enters. Of course, if you'd rather drive the Prius than watching it zip around the track, then feel free to arrange a test drive at 780 Salem Industrial Drive Ne, Salem, OR, 97301 today. Just be sure to leave the racing to the professionals.
