On any vehicle, tires almost never wear completely evenly. For a few examples: if your vehicle is front-wheel-drive, the front tires will wear out faster than the rear tires. If your vehicle is 4-wheel-drive, the rear tires will wear faster if you do a lot of starting and stopping, and the front tires might wear faster if you do a lot of hard cornering. And if there are a few left turns on your commuting route that you like to make quickly, then the right-hand edges of all 4 tires will wear faster than the left edges. By changing your wheels in an x-fashion (left front becomes right rear, and so on) all of these imbalances will be counteracted.
